Week 10: #23 Is this really the end? Or just the beginning

Web 2.0 has brought us to a place in technology we had never thought about. Technology has influenced every area there is. The knowledge we have gained from these excercises has allowed us to explore in ways we were unaware of. The question was asked what has this done for you? Well, to answer the question it has open a hold new can of worms for me. I thought blogging was just something that students and teens were into but after exploring how blogs are being used in share information both professionally and for entertainment this just expanded my interest the most. Networking with others of the same interest is good as well. You really do not have to use your real name but to read thoughts and ideas explored by others and then having to share yours without being intimidated is just fun.
Bookreads was really the blast for me sharing books with others and reading their insight on the books and people from other places sharing as well and then being able to get friends to share what they are reading was really exciting. I can see where this type of technology can help in many ways.
For students making presentations and even professionals using this Zoho could make it a lot easier. I had just thought that microsoft had it all but then Zoho show me their were others on the same playing field.
I am glad for this experience and I am looking forward for some new ideas and things to come forward in technology. Learing these different technologies is allowing us to stay abreast to what is available and this proceess gives us avenues that are open to new ways and ideas that are productive.
Many people are afraid of technology because it is being misused. However, I believe with anything eles me must allow commonsense to have a free course in our decision of how to use it. Using it properly makes us to expand for the better good.

To all those who were responsible for this project I personally want to say thanks for sharing the knowldege.
Personally, I don't think this is over I believe we have only just begun.

Downloadable Media (Week 9#22)

This seems like a winner. My familarity of e-books were basicly used in library school when we were having to do study online from and area that the teacher was using for a particular class assignment. Most of the time we downloaded from the process of reading it from an adobe reader. It had never really accured to me that the public libraries would use this as an added tool for outreach purposes of attracting users to library services. I like the set up that HCPL has it is simply using their library card. When using an adobe reader and reading from this process if an individual would download it on the desk top it would be good but it requires a time of discipline of staring and reading. However, if you could make copies of this then it would make it a little easier. If I wanted to use Libri Vox or Wowio I would use it has a means of seeing what they had and getting an idea of what a particular book is about and if the excerpts that I read caused me to want the book I would come back to the library and see if it is there and then if not I would purchase it if it's possible. I can see possibilities. I saw a book on libri Vox I would like to see into but again it's a matter of time on my part to take advantage of this. The over drives has current titles and I would have to pay for it but Libri Vox and Wowio are open to the public and of course their titles are a little older.

week 9#21 Podcast Smogcast

Working with podcast is a little difficult if you have not used it before. There is so much to choose from. As I looked around at different one's I really became concern. Making sure that what I had chosen the information was condusive to librarians or library concern. What I choose to look at was the live news of libraries. I even put it on bloglines so that I can get the update as soon as possible. This news is daily so there will always be something useful. My list is located on the rightside of my blog. If you click into the sections you will see the page and all you have to do is click on the heading and you would get the news on podcast. The podcast name is LibVibe. With all the information available it is possible to get information overload.
Many of the others that I looked at was okay but I would have to work with it a little more to really appreciate it.

Week 9#20 Discover You Tube

You Tube is one of the popular sites that many people are using. When I first heard of YouTube it was mostly used on many people personal websites. They would have one of their favorites posted. I see You Tube as a means of publizing many of the artist videos and music to give you an idea of what they are all about. I suppose it is safe to say it is a sample and a promotional marketing concept. many persons have looked at some of the videos on their favorite areas and discovered persons that are new to the field. Any one who wants to do a video is able to do one as well.
Earlier, In the blog I tried using YouTube on a broadcast. It turned out well. So it is good for those interested in using it.

I can see the library taken advantage of this tool by advertizing different skits and things advantageous to Harris County. As I was looking at uTube I decided to use this one about overdue books a song written by a librarian. Take a listen and see what you think. It is called the librarian's blues. Itis posted on You Tube above this note.

Week # 8 Parade of avatars

I posted my avatars and I made comments on the one's that I knew.
The one's that I could recognize was: Donna Solomon, Shelia Sweeney, Bill Jarvis, Martha Thompson, Gwen. McDaniels, Shandolyn Gradney.

I tell you this is some kind of a parade.

Promise Yourself
(one of the most classic motivational poems)

Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can
disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to
every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel like there is
something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your
optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best,
and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on the
greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give
every living person you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, and too
strong for fear, and to happy to permit the
presence of trouble.

Week 8 # 19 Web-based Apps

What an experience when I made an account using Zoho .

When I first looked at zoho I said to myself another Microsoft program to learn. However, as I paid attention to the different components to using zoho it was a

challenge. Then as I played around with the different tools on the bar it became a little simplier. It reminds me of a Microsoft processor but I am able to share this with different people. I decided to experiment with using the publishing aspect of Zoho. Above is a copy of what I did using publishing. I think it is all based on what an individual has in mind in using this tool. since I have been made aware of this tool, I will probably see what more I can do with Zoho.

Week 8# 18 Social Networking

Social networking is a way of connecting with people all around the globe. It is a way of connecting with people with like interest as yourself. I find that doing this is fun for people who have the time to play around with the web.

I think this is good in one way but at times I find that even in bloging I really do not want to talk that much all of the time. Even in using blogs in speaking with my close associates sometimes I just don't feel like typing my thoughts. I am more of a face to face communicator. This is good for people who thinks that no one is a stranger to them and they would find this quite interesting.

I searched on some of the net working sights like my space. When I searched it I discovered any and everybody is on that ome. I was courious about it because of all of the hoop-la about it. It's okay, if thats your choice. I looked into xanga and saw that it was a another blog post and I read some interesting things on this one. I think that if you do this enought you can become a real blogger. It is just amazing to what length one can go in using the internet.

Week 7#17 Blog about technology

Technology has taken us to a new level of communication. All through time we have always found new and better ways of doing something. Some have said that live is all about changes. With each change of advance their are pros and cons. Technology, has given us and opportunity to communicate in ways we had never thought possible. The freedom of the web as open us to vast knowledge of information. At the same time this information has brought about new challenges. The challenge of defining if this information is accurate or just some one having their own personal viewpoint. We have now relied so heavy on the internet we are handling busines from one click a way on keyboard. This is good but at times this too is anoying. There are times I want to talk to a voice a human being not a recording of some fake sound of a human being. Bank business is now done mostly on the internet and yet we have the concern of rather our identity will be stolen. This could still happen with paper but the internet is world wide.
Children are more interested in using the web rather than holding a desent concersation. Sending e-mail is faster but is feel so im-personal. If feels like I rather talk to key board than talk one on one with you. We have become so use this technology that it has invaded every area of our lives. In some aspects we do not even have to go to church or public fellowship we can just click it on the internet any time of day and relax in PJ's. There are times I even ask myself; how far are we going to take technology. At one time we wondered about the robot now we have to wonder about the internet and all of its capabilities. Technology is here to stay we either have to get on board and keep up with it or we will be left behind. All I say is stay on top of it and do your best to keep up.

I have look at some of the blogs and placed my comments. Some of them like library lioness, sports mom, Brown sugar, and the decider and many others. It's been a blast.

Week 7 # 16 What is Wiki

I have worked with Wiki for just a minute. In using the sandbox wiki, I put in my favorite books, resturants and I have registered. However, my thoughts on wiki for some things is fun to do and be apart of a growing community sharing ideas and different things. I did not realize how many ways you could actully us wiki.
When it comes to intellectul information that provides health and other pertinent information to life situations, I would not use the wikipedia as the only means of gathering information. I had been taught through time to make sure that the information is suppose to be reliable and the source is credible. I think if there are things that is just fun stuff and it really doesn't matter any way then the wikipedia could be fun.
Using Wiki as a pathfinder is a real good tool for public library use. The patrons can have a place to put something on what they have read or what they would like to see the libary purchase. This would help librarians where it would be easier for them to put this on the web and it would be easy to change when it becomes necessary.

The diagram that I found just lets me know that wiki will go on and on just like a running bus.

Week6 #15 Library 2.0

I have read the different views and ideas of the effect of Web2.0. After reading these ideas I have come to the conclusion that some of this information is based out of fear. There will always be change and change is good. Libraries are not exempt from change. Technology has given us an opportunity to evolve. We are global not in just business concepts but also in the information field. Our young people are constantly bombarded with technology of all types and how is that the libraries should stay "stuck" in the old ways of doing things.I am in agreement with Windy, libraries will not be left behind we will continue to grow and expand to reach the needs of the people and at the same time the image that was once looked upon as buildings outdated with old books it will now become updated computers and technology that brings information to them. There will always be persons prepared to assist the user in obtaining the information. There is no need to fear libraries will always be around it may change names but the concept will be the same.
I am in agreement with the 2.0 manifesto I will do all I can to help move the libraries forward. Library 2.0 means LIBRARIES MOVING FORWARD for a GREATER GOOD.

A time for advance bloging (taging this)

This is a time to learn new ways to make bloging more exicting. Althoug, I am new to using this process I have learned so much. From the beginning until now, I have gone from simply signing up to blog all the way to posting my thoughts, adding my favorite books, adding new friends to my reading, to making avatars, and now I am learning advance techniques to bloging. "hotdog" I am technical now.

claiming technorati as my own

I am claiming my blog on technorati.

Technorati Profile

Week 6 #14 Getting not-so-technical with Technorati

This is really interesting. I did not know that their was such a search tool for the authority of blogs. I thought blogs were just a another way of expressing individual thoughts on a particular subject. After moving around in technorati I see the extensive side of blogospher. I had heard of bloging a while back but as I stated earlier it was only used for fun stuff or as a way to share ideas with others. However, technorati has taken this to another level. I looked into the advanced search and I was amazed that it worked just as though I would do in an academic search. I think this would be a fun tool to see what is really out here among other blogers and what they have found to be useful for them. I am going to try my hand at tagging with technorati and posting something to see how it will work for me. The update of this will follow after my experiment. All I can say right now is bloging is more advanced than I thought.

Week6#13 Tagging makes the world go around

Using this tool call delicious would be useful for individuals doing multitasking and wanting to save different sets of websites (especially for research). This open forum allow others to see what you have in your file and if they want to use it also, all they would have to do is tag from the other persons file.

I want to take the time to explore this a lttile more to see how it would work for me. I think if I wanted to do research on a particular subject I could look to see if any one have information on the subject and I could possibly add it to my search.

This could posssibly be useful with book reads and looking at what others are reading and what their comments on different books. Again, I want to check it out more for myself and see how I will come out using it.

I think this is a good idea. Although HCPL already have a process in place this would be an added incentive for patrons to return items and get updates as to what is happening in the library. I have signed up for this and I think it will work for me.

I searched this one just for fun to see the comparison of the two(my library and good read. Well, I like my library for show purposes and for a libary club. I would use good read when I am comparing books and able to give my personal reviews of a book.I would think that the decision of use would be based on the intent of purpose.

Week 5 #11 Library thing

When I put this together I just picked what I wanted and copied and paste the covers.
There were many more books I am interested in but I did not want my list to take up the whole page. Library thing has a lot to offer indivdiduals interested in sharing their books with others. I would like to use this link in my book club blog. I want to experiment with this a little more and see what I come up with. Thanks for sharing this information. My books are listed to the right of my blog.
It was good to do a space bar. In this space bar by just typing my library thing brought forth some added books. However, my library books are located to the right of my blog page.

Week5 # 10 Meez avatar, customize comic strip

Just having fun allowed me to explore many different avenues to the same purpose. The avatars meez and yahoo are on the same focus. However ,Meez had more variety and little more online friendly.

Customize comic strip was easy to navigate and it allowed me to say what ever I wanted to say.
I think I can find way to use this from different perspectives in my future blogs.

FDToys was easy and doing magazine with the coffee slogan was good. My examples are following my comments of this post.

Week 4#8 Videos

In doing the video I used U-tube in doing this. I was sort of undecided of the way I wanted to do this. Often times people have used this for music but I was un-aware that this could also be used for commentary reports and news. This is a good learning process. Using the different tools and methods allows us to have different experiences.

Bloglines- Week4#7 RSS Feeds Simple

Bloglines is good if you need a variety of sites to pull from at one time.
Meaning, if I use CNN and I would look on their RSS feeds then I can go in different directions. However, once I had decided on what I wanted then I would just pull from my favorites and go from their. It is a good tool when you are not sure of what you really want. I looked at the other tools that were mentioned and I found that bloglines was better for me to use. I suppose the choice is based on what each individual find easier for them.

motivation

At times in life we need a little push from someone. However, it seems that situations causes us to carry excess bags we really do not need. With this in mind we have to learn how to motivate ourselves. There are words we can say to our selves, some of them are:
1. Is this worth my time?
2. If I am worrying about this will it change the situation?
3. Is this something I can change.
Well, if the answer is no to all of this; then shake yourself loose, sing a song, and lift your head for joy will find itself to you.

Just a thought from Gwendolyn chronicle

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Have someone asked you today?

Communication is the open forum. However, we are being bombarded by every one's views. No wonder subjects of all types are being explored. I suppose you are wondering what I am talking about. Well, I am rambling about the word "opinion". I did a little probing and just maybe you will find this interesting.
A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof: "The world is not run by thought, nor by imagination, but by opinion" Elizabeth Drew.
2. A judgment based on special knowledge and given by an expert: a medical opinion.
3. A judgment or estimation of the merit of a person or thing: has a low opinion of braggarts.
4. The prevailing view: public opinion.
5. Law A formal statement by a court or other adjudicative body of the legal reasons and principles for the conclusions of the court.

Now, I suppose you are wondering why all of this. We are often asked different questions and many times our answers are conveyed by our opinions or the opinions of others. So to sum this up it is save to say, an opinion is in the mind of the person who asked the question. Have you given one lately?

Internet safety

Internet safety is the responsibility of the individual. Some of the concepts should be common sense. I recognize the Internet is free speech, however, naturally we just don't convey information to people we do not know.

The Internet is a place to explore what is really out here, but all things are law full but not all is expedient. So for our safety it is best to think before we act. Our children are exposed to all information, but it is up to the parents and guardian, to take control as much as possible. In the process of control give the children clear instruction as to your views in your household. As you explain, allow them an opportunity to express their thoughts on the subject. Although, they are allowed to express themselves, we as parents have the final word.

As adults if we are to train our children we must also use discreation in what we do.
